In the summer of 2025, Michael Demean, a surgical resident, fulfilled one of his childhood dreams: to use his skills to help people living in resource-limited areas. Sent by SIM Switzerland, he spent three weeks at a hospital in Mukinge, Zambia, working with a passionate and dedicated medical team.
During his stay, Michael was impressed by the warm welcome he received from the local staff and the excellent collaboration between doctors, nurses and students. His days were filled with visits to the wards, operations, but also times of prayer in the hospital chapel, enriching discussions and wonderful encounters.
He discovers a deeply human approach to medicine, where listening and contact are as important as the care itself. Shared meals around nshima, discussions between colleagues from around the world, and the commitment of the healthcare workers particularly inspire him.
Of course, there are plenty of challenges: limited resources, serious injuries, complex infections... but also creative and effective solutions, such as the use of local honey for its antibacterial properties.
These three weeks were filled with experiences: surgeries, fascinating discussions and learning from experienced doctors. Michael says: ‘These encounters and experiences have shaped my outlook on life, medicine and my faith.’
